The 4BELS is a process. Most effective instruction is following the process from BELS1 introduction to BELS3 and BELS4 completions. Each step adds to an emotionally safe learning environment that strengthens each student’s motivation and self-pride. Too much instruction begins and ends with introduction to a curricular topic and a test to see how much the student was able to memorize or grasp. The purpose of education must be for the student to know its relevance in life and how to use it. Taking a test and moving on to the next topic does not accomplish this goal. We have a responsibility to ensure students respect and love learning to benefit their lives. The 4BELS process explains how to do make classroom information relevant.
